PRESS RELEASE (Belleville, IL): CROHN’S DISEASE, IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, and ULCERATIVE COLITIS plague everyday life for millions of Americans, often despite the use of over-the-counter and prescription drugs. IBS is the most prevalent, effecting one in every five American adults.
According to a recent study, researchers say there is a link between these diseases and interference to the nervous system from spinal misalignments. Crohn’s, IBS, and UC can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. Symptoms include pain, cramping, bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea.
Treatment for these digestive diseases include corticosteroids to control inflammation but while these drugs are considered the most effective, they can cause serious side effects, including greater susceptibility to infection. Immune suppressing drugs are also used. However, drugs once used to treat these conditions, including Zelnorm, have recently been taken off the market because of their serious side effects including heart attack, stroke and angina. Surgery is also an option and is extremely widespread with approximately 23,000 colostomies inserted in this country annually.
Now, more than ever, digestive sufferers are looking for an alternative treatment to ease their symptoms. Upper cervical chiropractic can be that answer. In a recent scientific study results showed that out of 17 patients who received spinal adjustments, 12 showed long-term and stable remission of their symptoms and of these, 9 experienced an alleviation effect.
Stacy, 27, an upper cervical patient and former IBS sufferer says, “I was a little skeptical at first, but I truly had nothing to lose, so I set up an appointment. Within one month I felt better! My symptoms subsided, my energy level increased and my attitude changed. It’s still hard for me to believe that I felt so differently just a few months ago.”
Although upper cervical chiropractors do not cure any disease, they remove spinal cord irritation and tension and reactivate normal transmission of brain messages to the affected parts of the body. “When this happens, the natural self-healing process can begin,” said Dr. Jerry Kennedy, DC of Family First Health Center in Belleville, IL. Family First Health Center is one of only two upper cervical practices in the Metro East.
According to Kennedy, the reason the body is able to begin to heal after this type of adjustment is simple. When the atlas and/or axis bones are out of position, the transmission of critical messages from the brain to all parts of the body is blocked. He said every cell, organ and tissue that is not receiving adequate nerve energy and communication from the brain will suffer and degenerate.
Kennedy compares it to a car that is out of alignment. If the problem isn’t corrected, the tires of the vehicle are going to wear out prematurely. You can keep replacing the tires, but until you have the car aligned, you will just be wasting your money. It is the same with the spine, Kennedy said. A person can continue to take medication for an illness, but if his or her atlas is out of its proper position and causing the problem, it’s not going to heal until the atlas is corrected and the body balance is restored.
